DEET (diethyl-meta-toluamide) has been used for many years now
as an effective insect repellent. However, some people experience
irritation or an allergic reaction to repellents containing the
chemical. If swallowed DEET is toxic and potentially fatal. This
means that great care should be taken when applying to the hands
or face or anything a child may put in the mouth. DEET should
not be applied to areas of broken skin or around the eyes. It
can also damage some plastics and synthetic fabrics, such as nylon
and acetate.
DEET enters
the bloodstream through the skin. Many people can use a repellent
containing the chemical without incident. However, some people
will suffer side effects ranging from rashes to severe muscle
twitching.
Campers using
DEET should be aware that using for a few days and not washing
could lead to serious reactions.

What is Neem?
The
Neem tree or Indian Lilac tree has been used for centuries for
the protection of people and animals against insect pests. Extracts
from the Neem tree have distinct therapeutic properties. Neem
oil is cold pressed from the seed of the Neem tree and is a powerful
natural insect repellent. The oil has been tested extensively
on the Highland midge by a team of leading experts in Edinburgh.
They found that midges have highly sensitive antennae and could
detect Neem oil from the air. The scent of Neem oil prevents the
midges from biting. Neem leaf extract is a tincture of shade dried
Neem leaves and has soothing properties to help heal damaged skin.
